월남전 참전자들의 인터넷사이트 '자랑스러운 주월 한국군(www.rokfv.co)'의 웹마스터 자격으로 작년 10월 재미, 재 캐나다 월남인들을 위한 TV방송국(VBS)으로부터 인터뷰 요청을 받고 지난주 (6.10)에 드디어 서울에서 인터뷰를 가진바 있습니다.과거 40여 년 전 자유의 십자군으로 우리의 우방 자유월남의 자유와 편화를 지키러갔던 참전 노병들에게 방송관계자는 총 7개의 질문을 했습니다. 그중에서 가장 의미 있는 질문요지와 그에 대한 저의 답변을 아래와 같이 소개합니다.

소개의 이유는 비록 개인적인 기우이겠지만 만의하나 우리는 어떠한 일이 있어도 위와 같은 질문을 던져야하는 입장이 되지 말아야 한다는 강박관념 때문입니다.

(질문)

When the South Vietnam were overrun by Communist Forces. What kind of emotions did you feel? (귀하는 자유월남이 공산군에게 패망했을 때 감정이 어떠하셨습니까?)

(답변)

우선 과거 자유월남의 자유와 평화를 지키기 위하여 목숨을 걸고 함께 싸웠던 군인의 한사람으로서 우방국 자유월남이 공산주의자들에게 함락되었다는 소식에 아연실색했으며 형언하기 힘든 감정을 느꼈습니다. 그러나 유감스럽게도 내 나라를 스스로 지키려 하지 않는 사람들은 국가를 가질 자격이 없다고 생각했습니다.

월맹은 월남을 공산화시키기 위해 월남 땅에 베트콩을 양산하는 하는 한편 수많은 공산주의자들을 양성하여 극단적인 행동으로 반정부 데모를 하도록 조종했고, 관리들과 고위 장군들이 부정부패에 여념이 없는 동안 월남의 정부와 사회에는 곳곳에 간첩들이 대거 침투해 있었습니다. 엄청난 지원에도 불구하고 국민들 스스로가 지키지 못하는 월남은 아무리 우방국 특히 미국도 더 이상 구해낼 수가 없었던 것입니다.

(First, as a soldier who has fought to preserve peace and freedom, I was shocked at the news that the Republic of Vietnam had fallen to the Communists. We Koreans were exceedingly saddened. However, we also felt that by being so negligent, perhaps they did not deserve their country. North Vietnam had trained a countless number of Vietcong and communists to communize South Vietnam. They were tireless in their efforts to mastermind and agitate the sympathizers to the cause.

There were violent demonstrations in every sector of the South by Communist infiltrators, while top-ranking officials and military generals were heavily involved in corruption. Therefore, we believed that the allied forces, including the United States, were no longer able to defend the Republic of Vietnam who didn't do utmost in defending their own country despite enormous support.)
