Once a man went into the wood to shoot. "I want to shoot some birds today," he said.

 

Just then he met a mother-quail.

"O Hunter, do not shoot my children," the mother-quail said.

 

"I will not shoot your children," the man said: "but how shall I know them when I see them?"

 

"My children are the prettiest in the woods," said she.

 

"All right," he replied.

 

When the hunter came back after some hours, he held a string of little quails.

Again he met the mother-quail.

When the mother-quail saw the little dead birds, she began to cry.

"Oh, why did you shoot my little ones?" asked the mother-quail.

 

"These are ugly little birds; you said that yours were the prettiest in the woods,"

the hunter answered.

 

Then the poor quail said; "Did you not know that

every mother thinks her own children are the prettiest?"

사냥꾼이 몇 시간 뒤에 돌아 왔을 적에 그는 어린 메추리들을

꿴 끄나풀 하나를 손에 들었다. 그는 다시 그 母鹑을 만났다.

 

그母鹑이 죽은 자기 어린 새들을 봤을 적에 부르짓기 시작했다.

"오호, 왜 당신은 내 어린 새끼들을 잡았읍니까?"

母鹑은 물었다.

 

사냥꾼은 대답했다. "네 새끼들은 숲 속에서 가장 예쁜 것들이라고 너는 말했는데 이것들은 볼상 없는 작은 새들이다." 라고.

 

그 때 그 가없은 어미 메추리{母鹑(모순)}은 말했다.

"어머니는 누구나 자기 아이들이 제일 예쁜 것들이라고

생각하는 것{母性愛(모성애)}을 당신은 몰랐오?"
